New Increases from UPS

by LJM Group

Less than 6 months after significantly increasing their fees for handling oversized packages, UPS is doing it yet again. Effective June 4, 2018, UPS will be charging their customers an additional $150 to handle Over Maximum Sized Packages.

Below is the May 11th notice from UPS:

What package characteristics will be charged with an Over the Maximum Limits Surcharge?

  • Packages that have an actual weight of more than 150 pounds
  • Packages more than 108 inches in length
  • Packages with a total of 165 inches in length and girth combined:
    • [longest side + (2 x width) + (2 x height)]

Over the Maximum packages will now come with a whopping price tag of $650. To think, less than a year ago, the Over the Maximum Limits surcharge was only at an egregious price tag of $150 – what a bargain that was.

UPS didn’t stop there. In addition, a new Shipping Charge Correction Audit Fee will be implemented. This fee will be assessed if the average shipping charge correction in an invoice week is more than $5.00. The Audit Fee will be the greater of $1.00 per package subject to a shipping charge correction, or 6% of the total amount of shipping charge corrections during the applicable invoicing period. In other words, if UPS determines a packages weight and dimensions differ from their calculation, an additional fee could be assessed, potentially affecting the cost of many packages.

The norm for the parcel carriers used to be annual rate increases; welcome to the new norm. You can now expect multiple rate increases within the same year, making it even more difficult for shippers to manage their costs.

These new fees will most certainly have a significant negative impact on many shippers’ bottom line. If you would like to know how this will impact your business going forward, please reach out to LJM GROUP at 631.844.9500 or email kenwood@myljm.com.
